A common criterion used to choose an appropriate biofilm carrier and the amount needed is the “active surface area”. The active surface area is a good indicator for the biodegradation performance of the carrier media. It is, however, very important to understand the specification of the biodegradation performance must be calculated in kg [pollutant] per m3 [carrier media] per day. This allows for calculation of the COD/BOD or nitrogen load to be removed. In summary, this is the only way to accurately calculate the required quantity of carrier media and the price related to the biodegradation efficiency per day.

The continuous sand filter efficient effluent cleaning

The continuous sand filter is based on the counter-flow principle. The raw water to be treated passes through the water inlet pipe and enters the sand filter through the water distributor located at the bottom of the filter. The water flow counterflows through the filter bed from bottom to top, and the filtered filtrate collects at the top of the filter and flows out through the overflow port.

The filter material that intercepts dirt at the bottom of the sand filter is lifted to the sand washer on the top of the filter through an air lift pump. The pollutants are separated from the filter material through turbulence. The impurities are discharged through the flush water outlet, and the clean sand returns by its own weight. The sand bed thus achieves continuous filtration. Sand washing wastewater is discharged through a special pipe.
